If you want to become a NRA certified Instructor in Rifle, this training is for you! The class is 20 hours and will be offered March 8, 9 and 10; cost is $75; minimum age is 21 or older. (Youth 18 to 21 may take this course to become an Assistant Instructor upon certification of this course.) All must be BSA registered.
Passing this course will give you the skills, knowledge, and attitude to become a rifle instructor who will be able to safely teach basic rifle shooting. You will learn how to teach, safely handle a rifle, know parts of a rifle, sighting, types of ammunition, shooting positions, range commands, safe gun handling, care, cleaning and storage of rifles. Passing this course will qualify you to become a merit badge counselor for the Rifle merit badge (once you have taken Merit Badge Counselor Training—required--which will be offered at a separate time by Marin Council).
Classroom time will include your NRA manual and binder (supplied), open book instruction, lecture, PowerPoint slides, student participation presentations, demonstrations, hands-on handling of rifles and props. Bring pencil, pen, highlighters and Post-It notes. Laptops or tablets may be used by participants. Dress comfortably for classroom time.
This is a 20-hour course with a written exam and range time. The class portion will be held at the Marin Council service center Friday, March 8, from 6:30-10:30 p.m., Saturday, March 9, from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Range time will be Sunday, March 10, from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at Camp Tamarancho. CUT OFF DATE for registration, Friday, February 22. Minimum number 4; maximum 14 people. Eye and hearing protection is required for the range. Range time is outdoors. Dress for range time according to weather. .22 rifles will be supplied by the class. Do not bring firearms or ammunition to class. You will also need to bring a check or credit card to the class in order to register with the NRA for your certificates and processing fees which will be about $40. This is separate from the class fee. You will need to be an NRA member (required). Register to be an NRA member at the NRA web site before the class.
